Volunteer Opportunities for Missions Ministry
Numerous missions are underway at Broadway, some on a daily basis while others concentrate their activities once a year. Here is a sampling of just some of these various ministries.
Baptist Center - Adult Clothing Room - Neighborhood Agape Meal
AIDS Care Team - Food Pantry - International Friends
Navajo Partnership - School Clothing Room - Pennsylvania Place
Van Zandt-Guinn Partnership
Just A Little Red Bible
The Baptist Center is the location of the social ministry arm of the church. Dozens of people in need of food, clothing, counseling, and financial assistance walk through the doors every day that they are open. Volunteers are the first line of assistance to all who enter. Volunteers work with the Community Ministries Director in providing the needed assistance or referral. The Baptist Center is open every weekday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
As many as fifty adults per week, most of whom are homeless, receive work clothes, coats, shoes, socks, blankets and hygiene items through this ministry housed in the Baptist Center. Donations can be dropped off in the Baptist Center and volunteers are needed to assist with their ministry on Tuesday and Thursday monrings. Individuals who are willing to sponsor clothing drives at their companies, schools, or office buildings are also needed.
The Agape Meal is served every Thursday evening at 6:00 pm. Broadway members host neighbors residents and homeless people at a family style meal prior to a short worship service shared around the table. Volunteers are needed to host tables and clean up after the meal. Follow the link above for more information.
AIDS Interfaith coordinates a program that pairs a team of caregivers with an AIDS patient. The volunteers provide emotional support and physical care to the client and their family.
Sack lunches are distributed to homeless people every weekday at the Baptist Center. Bags of groceries are also available to families living in the Broadway neighborhood. Volunteers assemble sack lunches on Mondays and Tuesdays. Canned goods are collected from the congregation on the first Sunday of each month.
Women from over forty countries participate in the ministry every Tuesday morning. They come to share fellowship and learn English and crafts such as sewing and ceramics. Language classes from beginning English to college entry level are offered.
For one week each year since 1991, members of Broadway's Navajo Partnership Team have journeyed west to the Navajo nation in New Mexico and Arizona. Working with Andrew Begaye, a former Navajo medicine man who now heads his own ministry called "Calvary Love," team members have conducted vacation bible schools for youngsters, bible study and leadership training for adults, self-esteem and decision-making seminars for young people, and participated in various construction, repair and clean-up projects. There is also time for fun and games. In 1999, the team sponsored a basketball clinic for grade school boys and girls, and held a carnival for kids of all ages.
Begaye selects areas on the reservation he believes will benefit from the work of the team, most often pairing the team with a local Navajo church. The churches are usually in remote areas of the reservations, and team members set up camp either on church property or nearby locations. One of the most rewarding experiences of the team members is the opportunity to work closely with our Navajo brothers and sisters in Christ, and support them with our love and encouragement.
The mission field is great on the reservation as only about 5% of the Navajo population are Christian.
Pennsylvania Place Apartments located south of Broadway Baptist is home to many families with children. This ministry seeks to offer these school-aged children programs of enrichment and teaching during the hours after their regular school program. Many volunteers in cooperation with the Broadway/Buckner Ministries offer a wide variety of educational opportunities from computers to social and physical skills for these children.
Thousands of items of clothing are distributed through this citywide program coordinated through the FWISD. Broadway cooperates with other agencies to distribute clothing to school-aged chidren and their siblings who live in the surrounding neighborhood. Clothing for children of all ages, infant though eighteen is needed. Volunteers to organize and distribute clothing are also needed on Mondays and Tuesday from 9:00 until noon. The ability to speak Spanish is especially helpful but not necessary.
Van Zandt-Guinn is a FWISD elementary school located near the church in a low-income neighborhood. Since "adopting" the school two years ago, Broadway members have served as mentors and tutors; and, have sponsored school supply drives, class trips, holiday parties, teacher appreciation events, and an organ concert for the students. Volunteers may choose a regular or occasional commitment - the only requirement is a desire to help children.
