Ministries for Children
At Broadway, our main objective in ministry to children is to create a safe environment in which children are accepted and respected, where they are encouraged to explore questions, encounter God, and create relationships with each other and with adult leaders. These are just some of the opportunities available for first through fifth graders.
Spiritual Formation
Sunday school Through Sunday school, school age children are introduced to Bible stories through drama, cooking, art, music, and video. Our team of volunteers is committed to helping your child meet God, hear His stories, and discover a personal relationship that they can have with God themselves.
Bible Skills, Drills, and Thrills On Wednesday evenings, school age children are invited to an action packed hour all about the Bible. Children will learn verses, hear Bible stories in a new way, and discover how we received the Bible we use today. Once a month, these children visit a homebound couple in the church.
Music and Missions During the school year, children in first through fifth grade are invited to join Music and Missions on Sunday afternoons following lunch. Children will learn hymns, songs of praise, and basic music theory. This group also sings in worship on a regular basis. Part of their time is also spent hearing about missionaries and doing hands on mission projects in the Broadway/Buckner Community Ministry.
Gateway to Worship Children in first grade join their parents in worship each week. Going from a preschool classroom to being still in worship is a big transition for five and six year olds! Sometimes, a child does better if he/she understands the various elements of worship and know what they are expected to do. This 10-12 week course does just that! New first graders attend this class during worship for the next month; then they transition to attending part of worship and part of the class. At the end of the time period, the children will have been introduced to all elements of worship that they may encounter. On Children’s Sabbath in November, these children are recognized and given a Bible as a gift from their church family.
Retreats
Way of the Child Retreat Spiritual formation for children comes in all shapes and sizes. One way that children are introduced to spiritual formation is through retreats using The Way of the Child material from Upper Room. While using meditation, gazing, art, reading, reflection on the world we live in, and various types of prayer, the children learn new ways to cultivate and grow a relationship with God.
All About Being a Christian Retreat Each fall, children in third-fifth grade are invited to a retreat focusing on the meaning of being a Christian. The children will learn the church ordinances, what the Bible says about being a Christian, what it means to be a Baptist, and why we worship the way we do at Broadway.
Preparing for Adolescence Retreat In the spring, fifth and sixth graders are invited to a Preparing for Adolescence retreat. The focus is preparing children for the middle school and high school years of their lives. Peer pressure, drug and alcohol, clothing choices, and frank talks about their changing body are just some of the conversations that take place.
Summer Activities
During the summer, we take advantage of the extended time away from school in order to do fun and innovative things that help children learn more about their faith. These are just some of the major events we lead each summer for school age children.
Day Camp this is our answer to Vacation Bible School and Music Camp. From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., children rotate through wacky science, recreation and games, choir, handbells, drama, art, and Bible study. This week is action packed and not to be missed!
PassportKids! This is a weeklong children’s camp for children completing 3rd-5th grade. We head to Camp Buckner in Burnet, Texas to meet with campers from other churches in a week full of fun and activity. Each year, campers learn about a specific mission group serving in our world through a night market, mission projects, music, art, and more. Child centered worship is the highlight of the evening while days are spent swimming, playing games, creating art, and participating in Bible study.
Mini-Camp A camp designed just for children finishing kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades! Hosted at Camp Broadway, this camp is two nights and three days of swimming, arts and crafts, hiking, Bible study, music, and more! Parents are welcome to attend with their child for part or all of the weekend.
Fifth Grade Trip Entering the youth group as a fresh from the children’s ministry fifth grader can be daunting for anyone. We try to make this transition easier by celebrating this important change of life transition. Fifth graders are whisked away for three days of fun and fellowship with the minister to youth and minister to children and their families. They get to know the youth minister, learn the crazy games the youth like to play, and get up to speed on the inside scoop regarding the youth group.
